Don’t miss a bite of this Sweet Desi Barfi!

Let’s Talk Movie!

If you’ve seen director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari’s Nil Battey Sannata, you would already want to watch Bareilly ki Barfi. The added ‘silver foil on the barfi’ here is the dialogue by Shreyas Jain and Nitesh Tiwari – writer/director of Dangal and Ashwiny’s husband.

Two guys, a girl and a ‘lovela’ shop – Bareilly ki Barfi is fresh and fun. Bitti Mishra (Kriti Sanon) is a Bareilly girl besotted by author Pritam Vidrohi (Rajkummar Rao) because she admires his power of words. Unable to find him, she seeks the help of the charming Chirag Dubey (Ayushmann Khurrana) on her quest to profess her love. A simple story in hand, the film is an acting showcase speared by the wondrous ‘proud papa’ Pankaj Tripathi. He could easily have been the protagonist in the movie. And is ably supported by his on-screen wife played by the ever-so-lovable Seema Pahwa. So be it the dynamic duo personality of Rajkummar, the sheer honesty of Ayushmann or the entirely au naturel Kriti – all the actors keep it free flowing. Throw a witty best friend (Rohit Choudhary) into the mix and you have a well-rounded film. Credit to director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari for keeping things subtle and real. Javed Akhtar’s voice-over narrative is breezy and ‘punny’. Overlook the loopholes and expect the ‘expected’ – Bareilly ki Barfi is a smooth ride. Unlike all other super-stretched films this year, it aptly wraps up in 2 hours and 3 minutes, serving the perfect holiday weekend watch.

Loosely based on Nicolas Barreau’s 2012 novel The Ingredients of Love, Bareilly ki Barfi stays amiable and endearing – which is exactly what it is designed to do. Watch it for the candid small-town charm and the simple feel-good factor – both of which are hard to come by in Bollywood.
